- Flower of the month: peony

Peony
The peony is a flower that surprises people. When the flower begins to bloom, it’s like an explosion of lots of delicate petals. One fun aspect of this flower is that there are more than a thousand varieties available. There are also colours to suit every taste. Read more about this remarkable flower.

The peony’s colours and shapes
Anyone who falls for the charms of the peony is in luck: there are more than 1000 varieties available in a host of shapes and colours. They come with a single row of petals, or with semi-double or double flowers. The cheerful peony comes in soft yellow, romantic white, candy cane pink or dark red. And the fragrance of peonies is particularly appealing and beautifully sweet!
From ugly duckling to beautiful swan
The peony in bud really is an ugly duckling. But as soon as it starts to bloom, it’s like an explosion: an incredible quantity of delicate petals emerge.
From an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan! Perhaps this is the reason why the peony is considered a symbol of love, happiness, health, prosperity and blooming romance.

Peonies in the Recentered Stage style trend
Peonies fit perfectly with the Recentered Stage style trend This style trend has been developed by the Flower Council for 2021. Contrasting colours are combined with soft pastels, for which you can use the peony - as you can see in this image.

Extravagant bouquet with peonies and Phlebodium
Peonies in a bouquet with Phlebodium: a surprising and simple combination with these big grey leaves. We often start with the flower - what foliage fits well with this flower? But sometimes it’s also good to start from the foliage. So ask yourself: what foliage shall I use? Gather a few types of foliage and then consider what flower would be the perfect match. You will find that you produce different combinations than before. We think that the peony looks stunning in this combination with Phlebodium.

Bouquets with peonies
A big bunch of peonies is a beautiful picture anyway. But it is also a suitable flower to combine with other seasonal flowers. The white bouquet in the picture is made with Peonies, Violet, Agapanthus and Alchemilla and some branches of blossom. And look at the pink bouquet, it's a treat! In it, peonies go beautifully with carnations, Delphinium and Gloriosa.
