Hyacinthus orientalis
Hyacinthus orientalis is also known as the ‘Fondant’ (Dutch hyacinth). This plant is always a popular item when spring is approaching. This cheerful bloomer is back in our range, and is a true seasonal product.
Origin
The hyacinth is a member of the Asparagus family, together with Muscari (grape hyacinth). The plant originates from the eastern Mediterranean. It can be found in countries such as Turkey and Lebanon, and even Asia. Here the hyacinth particularly grows between rocks at an elevation of around 2000 metres.
The story of how the plant arrived in the Netherlands is notable. It is said that Ogier van Busbeke (1521 – 1591) brought the plant from one of the aforementioned countries. Ogier was an ambassador for the emperor in Spain and a diplomat in Constantinople. The first description of the hyacinth dates from 1557, and come from Clusius. The plant that was brought to the Low Countries was originally blue, and had a single flower. A lot happened after the hyacinth was introduced to the Low Countries. Hence the number increased from four varieties to more than 2000. This is thanks to intensive cross breeding and selection of the plant. Another fun fact is that at that time the hyacinth was so exclusive that only rich enthusiasts could obtain the plant. This period was called Hyacinth Mania. Luckily times have changed, and we have plenty of this plant in stock!
